window boxes

Hello, everyone! It’s almost September! Can you believe it?!

My son started kindergarten last week, and every morning we have a ‘fun time’ dealing with his “I don’t want to go to school!!”  I wonder if this will ever stop….lol

Anyway, today’s post is on making simple window boxes.

Sylvanian Families Town Series buildings have windows that are all the same size (so far, at least.)  If you make some of these window boxes, they’ll be usable on every building!

For the giveaway, I made some simple planter boxes with some wood.

To make the window boxes easy to switch around, I glued on wires like in the photo below.  To make sure that the end of the wire doesn’t scratch the building, it’s best to fold the wire in half and hide the ends inside the planter.

Then I added air dry clay inside.

Next, I painted the surface of the clay brown.

And, spread clear drying glue on top.

I then sprinkled some tea leaves for the dirt over still wet glue.  All you need to do after this point is to stick in some flowers!

The wires keep the boxes hanging pretty well. Very easily adjustable, too.  Of course, I recommend adjusting the length of the wire as you please so they won’t stand out so much inside the buildings.

Many buildings’ windows are a bit bare in my opinion, so window boxes are great way to add some color in your town scenery.

Square Topiary Pot

Hello, friends! Have you already entered the giveaway? If not, please join in the fun with me – the deadline is September 4th!

Today’s post is about how I made the square topiary pots, which are included in the giveaway set.

As you can see, every side of the pot has a different little carving of (made up) flowers.

I know you can buy miniatures pots like these fairly easily from miniature shops or fairy garden supply stores, but I had to make these ones myself so I can include them in the giveaway set. 🙂

First I made a solid block out of polymer clay.  After I was happy with the shape, I baked it, and then sanded it to sharpen the lines.

Little by little I added different pieces to the block for more details. Each time, I baked the block lightly to make sure the new detail wouldn’t get squished.  Yes, this process had a lot of baking!

Basically, you repeat this process  Add Details –> Bake –> Sand –> Repeat

I hope my photos will suffice for the details….(I’m sort of running out of time today. lol)

This is what the pot looked like after adding all the details.

Finally, I added 4 different flowers on in centers of each side of the pot.

Oh yeah, I added the legs on the bottom, too.

This could be called pretty much finished at this point, but topiary pots usually go in pairs, so to make exact copies, I made a silicone mold.

There are usually two different types of silicon mold making kits, putty type and liquid type.  I have tried both of them, and for very fine details, liquid type works better in my opinion.  I’ve heard that Japan has some really good putty type kits, but I haven’t had a chance to try them out.  So just consider my opinion valid only in the US.

First step of making a silicone mold with liquid type is to find a suitable container.  It wasn’t too easy finding an empty container for the size I wanted, so I made one with Legos.  I remembered my husband once told me that people do that. 🙂

Perfect size!!

This is the liquid silicone mold making kit I used.

Mix….

And it’s ready to go!

Pour the liquid into the Lego container over the square pot… and wait…..

I waited a day for this mold to be finished.  I took apart the Legos, and the mold was ready to be used!

I poured the casting resin into the mold. This one only took 5 minutes for the cast to cure.

Tada~!

I smoothed out the top, and carved the edge a little bit.

Finally, I painted the casts with some acrylic paint.

Hmm, not bad!  I really should utilize silicone molds more often! 🙂

Giveaway 2017

Hey, everyone! It’s time for a giveaway!!

That’s right.  It is finally here!  I’ve been wanting to do a giveaway to show my appreciation to my readers for their support.  I got the prizes finally ready now, but it also happens to be the time for 2 year anniversary of ashmimi.com.  And on top that, I’m about to hit 3000 followers on Instagram.  (Thanks for following me, by the way, even though I don’t post very often…)  So I guess it’s just a good time for a celebration! 🙂

I have 2 sets of the items in this photo below, ready to be shipped to the winners.  (Originally, I was aiming for 5 winners but I didn’t have enough patience to make that many of the same things. So sorry!!)

Each set includes the following.

  • 2 pavement sheets
  • 2 street trees
  • 2 topiaries
  • 3 window boxes
  • 1 fountain

These items are made to go with the new town series that came out in Japan this year, but you can of course mix and match with other SF products and they will look fine.

The pavement sheets can be lined up multiple ways – and will look flawless!

As always, I think dioramas are lifeless without Sylvanians on them, so here are some set up ideas with dolls.

I used a ArtResin for the fountain, it’s supposed to not get yellow.  I did everything I could do to keep the fountain crystal clear the longest.

You can place  the window boxes directly on the ground and use them as flower planters, too.

I hope you like this year’s giveaway prize!

Here are the details of this giveaway.
